It is primarily an anti-vehicle weapon, but can be used on other targets as well. Javelin is designed to attack the top of a tank where the armor is weak. After Javelin is launched, the missile climbs skyward. As the missile approaches the target, it dives down striking the top of the target. If the target is protected from above, the Javelin operator has the option of selecting a direct-flight side-attack mode. In direct-flight mode, the missile takes a straight path to the target thereby hitting the target in the side. The direct-flight can also be used to engage bunkers and helicopters. Javelin is a fire and forget weapon, so a Soldier can fire it and seek cover, before the enemy even realizes that they are under attack. The Javelin CLU makes a very useful scouting device with or without a missile tube giving the operator day, thermal and zoom sights.
In the America's Army game the missile system will be fully functional. Players will be able to cycle through zoom and thermal modes, choose top-attack or direct-flight mode, and detach tubes from the CLU. In the game, a Javelin operator will start with the CLU, one tube, and a rifle. The CLU will replace the Javelin operator's binoculars and can be used as a scouting device. Additional tubes will be placed in the map, and other players can pick them up and supply them to the Javelin operator. The Javelin operator can only carry one missile at a time so successful use of the Javelin system will require teamwork.
