AMERICA'S ARMY PLATFORM   //   PROJECTS   //   IMPROVED TARGET ACQUISITION SYSTEM

Purpose: Basic Skills Trainer (BST)
Use: Classroom Training and New In-Game Heavy Weapon
Development: AUG 05
Fielded: N/A

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Developers are creating a simulation of the Tube Launched, Optically Tracked, Wire Guided (TOW) Improved Target Acquisition System (ITAS) anti-tank missile system for the Army's ITAS Basic Skills Trainer (BST) and as a new weapon in an upcoming America's Army game release. The Improved Target Acquisition System (ITAS) is a HMMWV or tri-pod mounted anti-armor missile system that uses all generations of the Tube-launched, optically-tracked, wire-guided missile or TOW. The ITAS is equipped with integrated day optics and infra-red thermal sights, an automated target tracker, and a laser range finder to provide a highly mobile, day or night capability needed by early entry forces to destroy advanced armored vehicles at long ranges.

Additionally, ITAS uses the TOW Bunker Buster and TOW 2B Aero missiles which provide lethal, long range, precision assault and anti-armor capabilities to light infantry forces. The ITAS Basic Skills Trainer (BST) realistically simulates the tactical situations, operational requirements, and potential system malfunctions that the ITAS gunners can encounter on the battlefield. The BST used the America's Army platform technology to train and qualify non-proficient and advanced gunners in all critical operational tasks of the tactical ITAS weapon system. To be qualified as an ITAS gunner, students are required to complete and pass a rigorous series of initial training and formal qualification exercises. For new students, the ITAS BST helps familiarize Soldiers with the controls, grips and system responses, and accurately simulates all system functions including power-up procedures, on-screen menus, laser ranging, and accurate missile flight. The BST also connects directly to the ITAS tactical hardware allowing the Soldiers to experience the "real feel" of the system. The BST helps more advanced students to master system operations through progressive levels of training requiring a greater understanding of all target engagement procedures including target acquisition and identification, target prioritization, manual and automated target tracker engagements, and quick response measures to challenging scenarios.
